Harold Gets A Job
Harold has been telling me that he is just a little bored with his job as watch bird. He also informed me that the pay stinks! I would have to agree with him on that.
He was just a little jealous of Hoby and I “getting” (ha) to go to work in the mornings. Harold thought that Biscuit could guard the house just as well as he does, at least during the day, since she is a heavy sleeper and wouldn’t hear a burglar over her own snoring at night.
I told him that if he wanted a job, to go and find one. I also told him that Ernie, the grand proprieter of the local New York Bagel Shop where I work, was looking for some part-time help. One of the employees had just informed Ernie that they had to move unexpectedly and were turning in their notice.
So Harold went and applied. When I asked how his interview went, he told me it went good and he was starting on Tuesday! I offered to let him carpool with me. Monday night at 8:30, I told him that he needed to go to bed since he was getting up so early in the morning. I think it surprised him that he was going to have to get up early. I am not sure when he thought that bagels were made.
Anyway, he went to bed and I got him up around 4:30 am. He was a very sleepy bird. We left the house around 5:20 am and he was one very excited bird. Once we got there I introduced him to the staff. He helped Carolyn chop ingredients for the tuna salad. He learned how to boil and bake the bagels and J showed him how to run the big mixer for the dough and the bagel maker. He also learned how to work the espresso machine and the register. It was a very busy day and by the end of it Harold was really tired. His little tail feathers were dragging!
Towards the end of his shift, Ernie got a call from the worker who had given her notice; something had happened and she wasn’t going to move afterall! She asked for her old job back. Ernie talked it over with Harold. Harold decided that working at the bagel shop was just too hard when you are only 12 inches tall and that she could have his job!
He did a good job for his one day, but I think we won’t have any more problems with Harold wanting a different job!
